What's On Offer in January 2010

Certificate in Multimedia Levels 1 and 2

 

This course covers Photoshop, Indesign, Flash and Final Cut Pro (for video).  There will be regular tutorial time which will help you develop your career portfolio.  The course includes Digital Imagine, Animation, Desktop Publishing, Video and Web Design.

Entry requirements:  Previous experience of these programs is not necessary.  You will need good keyboard skills and basic computer literacy knowledge.  Entry 3 or above literacy and numeracy.  Students with higher entry skills may take Level 2.

Office Skills Levels 1 and 2


Learn how to use Microsoft Office programmes to help you develop the skills needed for working in an office environment.  You will learn about the different menu options and basic techniques for formatting and editing menus that help to produce professional looking documents.  You will also learn how to use functions and formulas in spreadsheets and check if figures entered in simple spreadsheets are correct.

 

Entry requirements: Level 1 - A basic understanding of computing, keyboard and mouse skills plus Entry 3 or above literacy and numeracy.   Learners with higher entry skills may take Level 2.

Care Skills Level 1

 

Do you need skills to help you gain employment in the Health and Social Care industry?  This course will cover units which help develop personal confidence and self awareness as well as aspects of citizenship and communication in the workplace.
Entry Requirements: A desire to work in the care sector and Entry 3 or above literacy and numeracy skills.

Basic Skills in DIY

 

A very practical course covering the basic skills needed to maintain property including painting, tiling, plastering, wallpapering and some basic woodwork.  You will also learn how to choose and work with appropriate tools and maintain them.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Entry 3 or above Numeracy and Literacy Skills.  You will need to wear appropriate clothing for practical tasks which you do not mind getting dirty, plus sturdy footwear.

Developing Gardening Skills

 

This hands-on course will help you develop skills and knowledge about looking after seeds and plants, tools and the environment as well as simple garden maintenance.  
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You will need to wear appropriate clothing plus sturdy footwear for doing practical tasks both indoors and outdoors.

Pre Access

 

Improve your language, literacy and numeracy skills so that you are able to progress to work or further study.  You will learn how to plan effectively and work on tasks and projects to improve your reading strategies, speaking and listening skills, gain confidence in writing essays and reports using appropriate punctuation and grammar and work on numeracy skills like using calculations.  You will improve your communication skills and learn how to prepare for an interview.
Entry Requirements:  Level  1 Literacy and Numeracy skills and a desire to progress to further education courses.

Literacy Level 1

Improve your reading and writing skills in a wide variety of contexts.  You will revise and extend your grammar, punctuation and spelling skills and develop your communication skills both in writing and verbally.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Entry 3 or above Literacy Skills.

Numeracy Level 1

 

Develop the numeracy skills needed to work with numbers both at home and at work.  You will build the skills needed to carry out calculations with whole numbers and decimals, add, subtract, multiply and divide in practical situations eg money, shapes, time and measurements both with and without a calculator.  You will learn how to take simple information from lists, tables, simple diagrams and charts and make numerical comparisons using bars and pictograms.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:  Entry 3 or above Numeracy Skills

Learners aged 19+ may also be suitable for these courses although it is envisaged that most learners will be aged 16-18.
